Business Licensing

 

There are a number of different business licenses that the Town of Drumheller administers. A business license is required when you start charging a fee for any type of service you provide. The Town of Drumheller distinguishes among three types of businesses:

Resident Business

Any business that ordinarily locates or maintains a permanent place of business within the corporate limits of the town.

Non-Resident Business

Any business that does not ordinarily locate or maintain a permanent place of business within the corporate limits of the town. This category includes those, hawker peddlers, transient traders and non-resident building contractors and those non-resident trades people associated with the construction and/or repair of a building within the corporate limits of the town.

Business License Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. There are no reductions in fee amounts for either a partial year or any portion of a year thereof.

Resident Business License Fees

Resident Businesses are subject to an annual business license. The annual business licenses is for the calendar year, January 1 to December 31. Businesses that start after July 1st pay a reduced fee. Resident Businesses are categorized into two types of businesses: home occupation and all others.

Non Resident Subcontractors

Non Resident Subcontractors include all businesses that accept contracts for the erection, alteration, construction, repair of buildings or structures of any kind or the person engaged in such business, as the context requires. All subcontractors are required to obtain either a six month or 12 month license. The 12 month license is for the calendar year, while the six month license is valid for six months from the date of issue.

*Please note that Master electricians are exempt from the license upon proof of valid professional status.

Hawker and Peddler

Hawker and Peddlers are non resident businesses and include those who sell or offer for sale items door to door or from a temporary location other than a building. All Hawker Peddlers are required to obtain a one month or 12 month license. The 12 month license is for the calendar year, while the one month license is valid for one month from the date of issue.

Transient Traders

Any person who operates a business for 90 days or less within the Town for the purpose of liquidating or selling merchandise and does not ordinarily maintain within the Town a permanent place of business is considered a transient trader. All transient traders are required to obtain a 12 month license. The 12 month license is for the calendar year.

The 12 month license is for the calendar year. All businesses operating within the corporate boundaries of the town of Drumheller are required to possess a valid Town of Drumheller Business License. Failure to obtain a license can result in a penalty of up to $200 for first offence to $400 for third offence plus the cost of the required license.
