Dino Bucks used to encourage mask wearing in indoor spaces

August 4th 2020

On August 4 2020, Council agreed to allocate $5,000 to supply 1,000 "Dino Bucks" to retailers in the Drumheller Valley. Administration proposed using "Dino Bucks" to encourage the wearing of masks whilst in stores and other indoor spaces.

"Enforcing the wearing of masks through a bylaw is challenging in a community as spread out as the Drumheller Valley and requires significant resources to achieve compliance. We think a better alternative is to reward those who are wearing masks instead," explained Darryl Drohomerski, CAO of the Town of Drumheller. "We wanted to find a positive way to encourage people to wear masks rather than using enforcement".

Retailers will be given Dino Bucks to hand out to customers who are wearing masks and those customers can then go and redeem these vouchers at participating stores where they may be used as cash. Retailers will be compensated at 90% of the value ($4.50) of the voucher. Participating merchants will be given posters to show they want customers to wear a mask in their store and that Dino Bucks may be handed out.

"The joy of this program is that it also supports local business and encourages people to maybe visit stores they haven't visited before," added Mayor Colberg.

The Dino Bucks program will run from August 7th, to September 30th, 2020. Residents and visitors are encouraged to look out for posters in those retailers who are taking part in the program.
