Economic Development Manager 

Reporting directly to the CAO, the Economic Development Manager is an energetic contributor to a high-performance team, who is able to recognize emerging trends and take full advantage of the opportunities that currently rest on the horizon.  The successful candidate must have keen business sense and an ability to develop strong relationships that will guide the Town’s future growth and successes.  Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Strategic leadership and execution of the strategic plan for Economic Development and Development functions
  • Providing guidance to Council, Committees, Senior Management and the public in relation to the growth, development and long-term planning for the Town
  • Reporting to Council regularly on emerging and existing economic or planning issues; reporting progress on the strategic business and economic development plan and providing ongoing recommendations on any strategy modifications identified
  • Promotion of the expansion of existing area businesses, revitalization and beautification to advance the business and economic development plans
  • Promoting investment in Drumheller within Alberta, North American and global markets
  • Development and oversight of the annual operating and capital budgets as they pertain to economic development and planning & development
  • Identification and application for federal and provincial government grants and other funding sources and initiatives to advance the business and economic development plan
  • Developing networks, maintaining industry knowledge and early awareness of new best practices through membership and active participation in professional Economic Development organizations
  • Collecting statistical data relative to business and economic development; maintaining community profile statistics; identifying commercial and industrial economic sector investment opportunities; preparing relevant, useful and timely statistical reports for investors and site selectors.
  • Leadership of a small team consisting of a Development Officer and Safety Codes Officer
  • Developing strong relationships with organizations and agencies locally, regionally, provincially and nationally
  • Representing the department at local, regional and provincial and national meetings and events

Required Education and Experience:

University degree in Commerce, Business Administration or related field and a designation in Economic Development. Standing membership in a recognized economic development professional association.

A minimum seven (7) years of proven and progressive experience in economic development, preferably in a municipal environment including:

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, including experience using multi-media formats to present to investors, public, council, and local boards
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience
  • Knowledge of current economic development trends, investment attraction and planning issues in the Region/Province
  • Experience developing and managing departmental budgets
  • Knowledge of research methodology and statistics coupled with recent experience in research, collection and analysis of economic, business and community related data
  • Strong interpersonal skills including superior tact, judgment, political sensitivity, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to focus on the big picture/long term plan and maintain a progressive and innovative environment in times of imposed constraints and economic challenges
  • Proven ability to deal with diverse groups of people
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to be an influencer
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Valid Passport
  • Bondable

Additional Information

The general hours of work are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, with additional hours required evenings and weekends to attend council meetings, board meetings and for travel.
